Further to my post earlier today, I've had a few emails directed to me that
I thought I should respond to, but that may interest others in the group.

1) Richard Nilsson advised me that I can remap the workable area of the
tablet (vis-vis my comment of "About the only drawback I have is that I
should have probably bought the smaller 4 X 5 version (so that I don't have
to move the pen as far to access the MapInfo menu bar)." This can be
achieved by going into the Wacom Tablet Properties program and clicking on
the "Mapping" tab. You can then define either the tablet area or screen area
for only a portion of the tablet.

2) A few people asked where I purchased it and the price. What follows is
applicable for Australian readers. Once I decided on the tablet I wanted, I
did a price comparison using http://www.staticice.com.au/ and searched for
Wacom Intuos3 6 X 8 tablet. I bought mine from http://www.bozcorptech.com.au
at a base rate of AUD $ 425 + shipping + credit card fees. However I just
did another search and see that it can now be bought for even cheaper (AUD
$ 391) from other outfits! As an aside, if I am going to purchase any
computer "bits" (or toys as my wife calls them), I always do a comparison
shop using this site. I'm sure similar ones exist for users in other parts
of the world and a search in Google would probably list them.

3) I am running it with MapInfo 8.0, but as the tablet acts just like a
mouse, I would assume that it will work with any version of MapInfo. It
certainly works with Windows 2000, is great with Word (especially the eraser
function at the end of the pen), and also Paintshop Pro.

4) Someone also asked if "the smaller 4 X 5 size would likely be annoying by
having to reposition the pen every time one runs off the edge when
digitising?". I don't think this would be an issue as the actual workable
tablet area is mapped 1:1 to your monitor screen. As such, you cannot "run
off the edge while digitising" ... if you are digitising something that
continues off the edge of the screen, as you move the pen (or even regular
mouse in MapInfo), the screen automatically pans to this area.

I've obviously stirred people's interest in this new technology. I'd be
interested in hearing how others find using this method of input should they
decide to migrate across.

Many thanks to all who have contacted me with comments, advice and queries.

Regards,

Bill
