I agree Jakob, I too would prefer one list - whilst much of the programming
stuff is beyond my present capability - it is a useful insight in to what
you guys are doing and an incentive to develope grater skills.

I think Bill's suggestion of having a separate programming-specific
list is a great idea.
I would prefer one list. The step moving from ordinary MapInfo use to do
simple MapBasic programming is very small.
This force of MapInfo in the ways of scripting it should be reflected in
only one list.

I for one disagree with the previous posts.
I think Bill's suggestion of having a separate programming-specific list
is a great idea.
It means you are posting your question to a specific target audience,
consequently all the Mapinfo users don't have to read through all the
programming garble which generally is of no use to them anyway.
And if you really wish, you could always subscribe to both lists (which
I would be doing as both interest me) and the net effect would be the
same as having one list - the point being that at least you would have a
choice.
MY BIG REASON FOR HAVING TWO LISTS:
I'm a frequent user of the MI-L archives on Directionsmag. Being a
programmer myself, I find that when I'm searching for a programming
specific topic, inevitably I am presented with dozens of non-programming
related search results. I think it would be very beneficial to
constrain your search to either a programming-specific archive, or the
general user list archive.
Now, just to contradict myself:
MI-L has become a low volume list (relatively speaking) ever since it's
become a subscription-only list. With roughly a dozen posts/day,
coupled with the fact that programming topics are less prevalent, it
makes you wonder whether it's worthwhile going to the trouble setting up
the infrastructure to run a separate list? These are the real reasons I
can think of for not having a separate list.
Those are my thoughts anyway.
Which ever way it goes, it's a great list and a great community!
Cheers,
