The Express additions (along with Visual Studio 2005) run from Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 where as MapXtreme 2004 was built against the 1.1 framework.  This in itself is not necessarily a problem, it depends on whether MapXtreme makes a call to an assembly that has changed in version 2.  If they are desigining the next version to work with Visual Studio 2005 then there should be no reason why it would not work in the Express additions.  The essential difference between Express and Professional Visual Studio is that some of the targets aren't available in Express.  for example you can't create a mobile application in Express.

Of course, Project Grande will provide the ability to write assemblies in .NET (any language and environment) and then run within the MapInfo environment.  As far as I can tell MapXtreme 2004 should work fine too.

Subject: Ang. [MI-L] VS.NET 2005 - Free Express Versions

Hi Lorne!

Very interesting tip indeed.
But I seem to remember that MI.NET was very picky about the programming environment, and only would accommodate a certain flavor of Microsoft .NET.
Do you have any idea how these Express editions fare in that respect?

Hälsning / Best regards Mats.E

[MI-L] VS.NET 2005 - Free  Express Versions

There was a discussion about a year ago that centered on Project Grande and the expense of the .NET languages.  I stumbled upon some freebees yesterday.  Apparently, for the next year,  Microsoft is distributing free "Express" versions of all the 2005 Visual Studio sub-languages. I installed the VB.NET version yesterday and it appears to have a fairly rich set of controls and components.

Here is what is available:

VB.Net 2005 Express
C# 2005 Express
C++ 2005 Express
J# 2005 Express
Web Builder 2005 Express
