David, We have a MapInfo plug in that will do that for you. It is the called the Geographic Transformer Extension for MapInfo. Check it out here: http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/products/transformerext.php
It will open the image and automatically register it north up. It also has a higher order transformation capability for more accurate reprojection and other great features.
