All of which is a good argument for Windows XP SP2 as your operating system, and taking care with Restore Points. In fact, I think XPSP2 sets a Restore Point each time a well-behaved installer runs - maybe even for those that aren't so nice (though the nice behaviour could be due to Windows Installer 3.1 - I must find out). Anyway, you're able to manually set a Restore Point at any time. It would be good practice, on a critical machine, to do so often.
