Sarah, Wow! That will take you until the next winter Olympics! We have an application that will do this for you in batch in a matter of hours. It is called the Geographic Transformer. It is not free though. The list price is $899 US. It will save you a lot of time and thus is well worth the investment. We are coming out with a release soon that will also allow you to create MrSID images for a small additional fee. Thus this product will 'read in' and 'write out' all major GIS formats available today! Another great value.
The problem with writing ECW is that to do so requires licensing a library from ER Mapper. So it is probably very unlikely that you will find software that does this for free.
