...Ye-eees I think that'll work well enough for my
purposes... but my table has 1000s of polygons - is there a way to automate
this?
I don't have the programming skills and I don't have the
time to do it all manually. I really should
see if i can get some training in Mapbasic.

Just an idea: Create your normal buffer around
polygon 1 and then use the combined polygon from all other polygons as eraser on
the buffer polygon. Would that do it? This is not exactly what you are asking
for, but depending on your data and the size of your buffer it may
work.
