I'm a complete neophyte at MI & Oracle 10G XE and am looking for MI/Oracle 101
if
such a thing exists. :-)

I have installed Oracle 10G XE on a desktop on my network, and have created a
table.
I haven't done anything else on that machine & it doesn't have MI 8.0 installed.

I have a notebook with MI 8.0 installed and I want to connect to the desktop &
display
the Oracle table in my MI 8.0 browser on the notebook.

I've started with File/Open DBMS Connection & up comes a dialog box.

First, I'm a bit confused as to whether (for Oracle 10G XE) I should be using
ODBC or
Oracle Spatial. The data in the Oracle table is not mappable, and only contains
Lat &
Long info in number fields. Can anyone enlighten me on this one?

Next, regardless of which one I chose, eventually a box comes up with Username,
Password & Server Name. I have a user SYSTEM and the associated password that I
created when I installed 10G XE, so that's no problem (though eventually I will
create a
proper user for this database only). However, the "Server Name" has me beat.
I've
tried the IP address of the server, and have also tried the desktop machine
name
"Oracle1", but I get:
"Oracle Error: ORA-12170: TNS: Connect timeout occurred."
Just my luck that the Oracle forum is down at the moment, as Google pulls up 1
hit for
ORA-12170 and MapInfo on the forum, but I think it's more of my lack of
understanding of this aspect of MapInfo anyway.

Failing answers to the above, does anyone know of an online Dummy's Guide to
MI/Oracle 10G XE? I just spent a couple of hundred dollars on manuals for
Oracle10G
but that was days before the XE version came out, and of course they don't have
info
on interfacing to MI anyway.

Thanks,

Dave
