Hello Sam and Spencer Thanks for getting back to me.. I was briefly hopeful that Sam was right.. but in my less than awake state this morning i accidently posted a PRJ statement that i had 'tried tinkering with at random..' When i was getting no joy from the settings i had been given i tried Feet instead metres...just incase...., and it was this prj statement i had posted to the list. I have been using metres (code 7) and still to no avail..
its all very curious.. the pantomime madagascar appears to be the correct size, orientation and shape as the real one, but some 2210 km nw of where it should be ( +c.670 kmE and + 2108kmN) I can 'force it' back into place by using a transform clause in a mif file but then the coordinates that get returned by mapinfo bear no relation to those extracted from the paper maps...if it was just a case of having stuff 'overlayable' i'd have been happy, but i need to get the digital map to have the same coords as the paperwork so that further transcribing of info from geologists notes can take place... like you Spencer i am mindful that the azimuth is the same as the origin lattitute (alarm bells aringing!) , but it is reported on at least three bits of paper..infact thats just about the only thing the paper maps have been consistent in..... and not being an expert i can't really argue... so i'm still stuck...and i havent even started on bringing in raster data ;-( regards r ********************************************************************* This message (and any attachments) is for the recipient only.
