To start (at least with Google Maps) is very easy. You can find link to a lot of examples at http://www.mapki.com/wiki/Main_Page.

I find the combination with Ajax technology very interesting, and it possible to get in touch with server side programming and spatial web services.

Nevertheless, your result are dependent from a big company...

I was just wondering if any of you have used either Google Maps or
Windows Local Live API to develop your own web site?  I'm thinking about
dipping into it and was curious how difficult it is or might have been
to get everything up and running.  Any examples what you've done would
be great to see as well.
