I got a good response to this one, and as you can see, it was also fast. I
managed to get data for all the IL townships and section boundarioes for
all counties except Jo Daviess, Madison, Jersey, Calhoun, Tazewell, Mason,
Alexander, Pulaski and Massac (does anyone have *section boundaries* for
these?)

The most-often cited URLs were:
The National Atlas
http://www.nationalatlas.com/mld/plss00p.html This has 1:100K township
boundaries available for download in shapefile format for all states that
use this system. Unfortunately, they don't provide section boundaries.

Illinois Natural Resource Geospatial Data Clearinghouse
http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/nsdihome/webdocs/browse.html This is a good place
to start searching for free Illinois GIS data. However, the PLSS Coverage
here is the same as at the National Atlass site; townships only, no
sections.

Also mentioned were:
The Land Survey Information System
http://www.geocommunicator.gov/GeoComm/lsis_home/home/index.html This one
has a nifty map interface to the download, but nufortunately there were
only 6 townships listed for ILlinois, and since they were from a 3rd party
source, you couldn't downlaod them.

In the end, I got the township boundaries and most of the section
boundaries e-mailed to me from list readers -- very convenient!. Thanks to
David Lamb, Kim Ramirez, Michael Hankins, David Reid, Kurt Cholak, Ben
Greenberg, Steve Wallace, Greg Toothaker, Tom Thompson and Conrad Stanley!
