In
addition to the page referenced by Mike Osbourn, some helpful tips on MrSID
file conversion are available at http://69.17.46.171/Site/Search.aspx
(enter MrSID in the search box). It’s a Manifold site, but has info
helpful for MapInfo users on this topic of MrSID file conversion. Lizardtech
is now part of Celartem Technology Inc. Unfortunately, they have organized deals
with some government agencies that have committed to using this format for some
years. Note the
speed of file conversion varies greatly with the conversion utility. The page
at georeference.org shows actual conversion times. As John Campbell notes,
Irfanview is very inefficient – I experienced the same problems, and
would never recommend it. Also, an
additional problem you may encounter is when the conversion from a large MrSID
file generates a file (eg, TIFF) which is larger than 2Gb or 4Gb – some software
cannot read such large files (or perhaps some file formats were not originally “designed
for” such sizes). In fact, some versions of ER Mapping’s ECWViewer did
not handle 4Gb .TIF files. The latest
(free) JPEG2000 /ECW Viewer can do so, I think (but I don’t think it
handles .SID at all). As a
side note, lately ER Mapping seems to be keener on JPEG2000 than ECW (or, I may
be inferring that). In my
opinion, I’d like to see the two .SID formats disappear forever. IL Thomas From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mike Osbourn I have used mrsid extract numerous
times over the past year or so to convert sid files to ecw. This site http://www.georeference.org/Forums/tabid/71/forumid/1/tpage/1/view/topic/postid/13672/Default.aspx
provides some other translators that might be of interest to the list. HTH Mike Osbourn |
