It may well be more that one thing but I have seen a few occasions where bad data 
throws this 
type of error on printing. Some drivers seem better at handling it than others. If 
vector, check the 
data set with mapcheck and if any of the layers give geometric errors, try printing 
without these 
layers visible. If printing then succeeds, it would be worth fixing the errors for a 
definitive test.
