The issue of Bivariate Thematic Mapping is covered in the Advanced MapInfo
course that we teach at our MapInfo Authorized Training Center.
The step that is missing from the previous suggestions is related to the
nature in which thematics are applied to layers. It is possible to
thematically shade with a transparent background fill style, but MapInfo
interprets this differently if there are other thematics already there. In
attempting to apply this to the layer the background shows up as white.
The trick to getting it to work is to add a second copy of your layer to the
map. Create the first thematic on the first copy of the layer. Then create
the second thematic on the second layer. The thematic on the second layer
applies to that whole layer, making the entire layer transparent revealing
the underlying thematic as well.
This works beautifully in Windows. Since transparent fills are also
supported on the Mac it should also work there.
Also be careful if you are using MapInfo version 5.0. In the past you could
choose the table name for thematic shading and it defaulted to the topmost
copy. In 5.0, the layer will show up listed twice. You must choose the
topmost copy manually.
