1. I'm looking urgently for any information on whether such a GPS device
exists today to do an evaluation for a potential client quickly over the
next few months.

2. The main purpose is to track the position of an engineer(s) in the area
of operation (working on user-defined Eastings & Northings), send back his
position at intermittent intervals to base camp; and relay short text
messages from base camp to the engineer out in the field.

3. The specs of the device are as follow (or any device which meets most of
the specs can be considered) :
a. To be able to connect the GPS device to the helmet or attach to the
pocket of the engineer (or any unobstrucive location on the personnel)
b. Device to be compact (smaller than size of palm)
c. Ruggedised (waterproof, shock-proof, dust proof, etc...). Not mil specs.
d. Light-weight & portable (5oz and below)
e. Runs on AA/AAA dry cells (for a continuous period of 5 days)
f. Track & send back intermittent positions (based on user-defined
intervals for logging positions)
g. Any antenna required should be very small and not obstruct or retard the
movement of the engineer (who is expected to be bashing/rushing thru' rough
terrain & vegetation)
h. Can send GPS positions to base camp (must be in Eastings & Northings --
not Lat & Long). Area of ops to base camp = 15-20 km max.
i. GPS has DGPS capabilities
j. Can download position logs subsequently at end of mission to a PC at
base camp and display (or play-back) position in real-time /
accelerated-time.
k. As there will be several engrs out in the field concurrently, each GPS
should be set with a unique identifer for each engr.
l. GPS can be connected to a CDMA/GSM handphone to transmit positions &
receive text messages intermittently. Although, a GPS as a built-in
transceiver is most ideal.
m. The transceiver devices is base camp must be reliable and received
positions can be interfaced to a PC with MapInfo to display postions in
real-time.
n. All devices (at base camp & on engr) have been tested, proven &
commercially deployed.

Regards.
