You might try:

1)  Copy all the relevant files to back them up:  eg: city.tab, city.dat,
city.map, city.ind, etc.
2)  Close the relevant tables in MapInfo.  Better yet, just shut MI down.
3)  Delete the file called [something].ind   eg: city.ind
4)  Open the table again in MapInfo.  It will complain, but should not
exhibit previous complaint, or fail to open the table
5)  Reindex (Table>Maintenance) the columns that require indexing.

Helps?  Bad?
