Good direct support for .shp certainly makes sense, but I don't
think that the ESRI world is dropping coverages for shape files any
time soon.
Lots of ESRI users need (or at least think they might need)
the topological structures that are present in coverages and absent
in .shp and .tab.
At least as important is ESRI's Spatial Database Engine (SDE).
Like Spatialware, it promises efficient storage of large datasets for
the enterprise using Oracle, Sybase, ... Virtually all of ESRI's products
can act as SDE clients.
The API is public. Wouldn't it be great if MapInfo could use spatial data
directly from ESRI's flagship SDE servers? Intergraph can do it....
