Hi,
If the incorporation of VBA into MapInfo would allow us to do form
development visually and to have data-aware controls, this would be a good
idea. The other thing is that this would bring up Visual Basic even more in
place to be RAD monopolist. What about Delphi ? In my opinion much better
and also easy to use. Of course, syntactically MapBasic is closer to Visual
Basic. But it is really strange that there are no obvious attempts (at least
to me) to have a kind of "Delphi for Applications", even Inprise seems not
to try it. But VBA is probably the main reason why Visual Basic becomes so
popular, since everybody gets it with Office in VBA flavor, so when you want
to do the real programming you do not have to switch to another language.
If you look at bookstores you can find tens of meters Visual Basic
literature. If you look for Delphi, you can be lucky if it is more than one
shelf meter, at least here in Germany. Also if you see that it is difficult
to get some information of how MapInfo and Delphi work together (at least
most if not all of the examples in the manuals and the MapX eval copy seem
to be Visual Basic or C) you can guess that Delphi comes in too late.
But in general I would really appreciate if VBA could be used as the
programming environment for MapInfo without using the integrated mapping
route or even MapX.
Just some thoughts.

Fellow listers,
Will MapInfo adopt Visual Basic as the programming
environment for customising MapInfo?
ESRI announced last week that they were taking this
route for their software line. We got a little
more information from them, and a response from
list activist Andrew Dressel at MapInfo. The
story is at:
