Richard (and all),
Subscriptions get dropped from MapInfo-L almost every day. This
happens when mail servers can't deliver mail for some reason and
they bounce all the mail back to me. Reasons range from users
abandoning their mail boxes, or exceeding their disk quota for
their mailbox, or spam filters rejecting mail relayed by a third
party (like our mailing list), cratered servers on the
recipient's end, sites too far away (only 18 hops are allowed),
and who knows what else. Bits of the net are always breaking and
new bits are taking their place. It's kind of like a body
constantly adding new cells and letting the rest fly off as loose
hair and dandruff.
Since I get about 200 of these EVERY day, I start cutting
accounts that continue to bounce mail for 3 days. I can't even
tell you when or why you've been cut because you are apparently
not getting mail anyway. I figure if you're really watching your
mail, we'll hear from you.
The fix is simple. Just resubscribe and let's see what happens.
If trouble occurs again as soon as you resubscribe, I'll try to
send you a sample of the bounced mail and you can get your ISP to
fix it. If you suddenly don't see mail from MapInfo-L anymore,
contact me directly, either here or at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sorry for the inconvenience, but I don't know any better way to
handle this. It's a bit of a tedious manual process, so I don't
waste a lot of time trying to investige. Many times problems
vanish as mysterously as they appeared. But I have to remove
broken addresses regularly because they impact the performace of
the list, and usually I can't tell if an address is really
"broken" or just not working well. But feel free to ask me if you
have any questions about MapInfo-L service.
