Darren,

The first thing you need to know is that connections to Oracle from MapInfo are
done via a language/protocol called ODBC. Setting up an ODBC driver
(distributed with MapInfo) will be part of the solution. There is an issue with
connecting MI 4.1, which is a "back" version, to Oracle 8.04xyz12345, which is
more current. I'll put that aside for a moment.

The next question, regarding MapBasic: Yes you can send SQL using MapBasic, in
fact, you'll have a few more tools. It still goes through ODBC.

Thirdly, I have seen solutions that stored network information in vanilla
Oracle tables, to be reconstituted by either MapBasic or MS VB/VC++ (issuing
MapBasic commands to MapInfo via OLE, sorry, too much info.) However, this is
dinosaur stuff, thanks to SpatialWare. The justification for using SpatialWare
is essentially the same as for using Oracle: Lots of data, and/or lots of
users, and/or SQL horsepower.

Finally, the best and essential reference is MapInfo Corp., which I'm sure will
perk up it's ears when anyone hears "Oracle", "SpatialWare", etc. You'll
probably want someone inside to think about that MI/Oracle version issue I
alluded to.

I don't know who your contact would be in the UK (London, is it?), but you can
find out at:

http://www.mapinfo.com/corporate_info/contact_mapinfo/europe.html

I'll bet you a nickel that Mr. Dressel or Mr. Wemple of MapInfo has seen your
message, and forwarded it to the appropriate person(s).

Naturally, I'm available for any expenses paid trips across the pond, if the
occasion arises.

Helps? Hurts?
