One way that I found to calculate the intersecting area was to create a
polygon for the intersection as follows:
Make the red polygon editable
Select red polygon
Object, Set Target
Select blue polygon
Object split
This then creates a polygon of the overlapped area which you can click on to
find the area. You could then move to another layer if you would want to
keep the intersections, which would leave the original layers unaltered.
