Thanks for your interest. I am working on a history of Pittsburgh. For that project I have scanned in a series of Pittsburgh street maps from ca 1850 to the present, in order to delineate ethnic neighborhoods, and also to do thematic mapping of socio-economic variables. I've hit the following problems/limitations with MapInfo: 1. MapInfo doesn't have much of a symbol set of buildings/dwellings/trees, etc that I can place on the maps, notably the maps I want to use to present map information in a visually interesting (as opposed to analytical) manner. For this I am thinking of switching to Corel Draw, and leaving MapInfo entirely. 2. Since I am 'artistically challenged' I can't draw nice-looking physical features, even with Corel. I have searched the web for line art that can be incorporated, but haven't found anything yet. The great bulk of what is out there are photographs; what I need are line drawings in color and/or black and white of old (19th century) urban architecture. The stuff out there dealing with architecture tends to be of notable/remarkable/important buildings rather than of 'typical' dwellings and buildings. 3. I can't make 3d maps. Pittsburgh is a city of hills and valleys, and these have a lot to do with configuration and composition of various neighborhoods. I looked at the webpage for Vertical Mapper, but the examples of 3d maps they provide from contour lines don't look very attractive In sum, I am successfully using MapInfo to produce analytical/Thematic maps but not in producing attractive, publishable maps that can be used to illustrate the narrative text.
