HUNTSVILLE, Ala, Jan. 14, 1999 -- Intergraph today announced GeoMedia Viewer, another open-platform GIS tool from Intergraph that gives desktop mapping users a simple and standard way to visualize geospatial data. The GeoMedia Viewer CD is free from www.intergraph.com/geomedia/viewer. The Viewer gives business professionals throughout an organization a taste of GeoMedia, featuring the pioneering data server technology for viewing data in native Microsoft Access or ArcView formats. It even allows users to view GeoTIFF files as a backdrop to the vector map data, providing a real advantage for distributing spatial information. An introductory set of sample geographical data for the U.S. and Europe is also included on the Intergraph web site. Visitors can choose from nearly 500 megabytes of data, which features places of interest and demographic information.
"The Viewer addresses an increasing demand from our users who have not been willing to settle for anything less than GeoMedia technology to distribute their data to their internal and external customers," said Preetha Pulusani, executive vice president of Intergraph's Mapping and GIS division. "GeoMedia Viewer makes it easier than ever for users to share data without worrying about file formats."

Another FREE viewer with gigabytes of free data from a billion (but getting smaller) dollar company. Is there a message here?
Also I was wondering if anyone could confirm or reject some EOY 1998 numbers I have been digging (read data mining) for:
ESRI - Worldwide user seats - aprox 350,000 to 400,000 with 200,000 as AkeViews
Intergraph - Worldwide user seats - aprox 200,000
MapInfo - Worldwide user seats - 350,000
Worldwide GIS user (legit licenses) - about 1.1 million
These estimates have been pretty hard won as no one really seems to know. But in hunting and pecking around the internet these seem to turn up. The ESRI numbers really baffel me but they have been confirmed from two sites. Does this mean that MapInfo may indeed be winning on the Desktop?
Intergraph has a presence in GIS but its only a marginal(?) contributor to the $1 billion in their gross sales revenues. They seem to be locked in a death grip with Intel.
