Hello Listers:
My thanks to those who responded with suggestions for my problem. I received several
along the lines
of that below (thank you Warren). However, overlapping seems not to be the problem,
and I've
concluded that Cinda Graubard's similar experience (see below) reflects my own - ie a
video card
problem. I've contacted Gateway to see if updated driver is available.
Thanks again
Richard

Richard:
I have had the same problem in the past and was unable to find a solution.
It was several versions of MapInfo in the past, and I believe we finally
decided there was some kind of a conflict with MapInfo and the videodriver
on my computer. I am not using that particular computer at the moment, but
the current user says he has not noticed a similar problem and he is
running MapInfo V5.1.

I believe if you go to print, the colors/patterns will be all right. Check
the assign colors/patterns dialog box for the example and see if that is
backwards, also note that the same object plus pattern will be, e.g., red
on white at one scale and randomly change to white on red as you zoom and
pan your map. If I recall there were some objects, all assigned the same
color plus pattern, at a given scale/map view that were red on white while
others are white on red. Try the files on a different machine and go
through the same checks.

I know this doesn't solve the problem, but if it is a video driver
conflict, you'll have to either learn to ignore it, or try upgrading your
video driver, changing your video driver, or making sure you have the most
up to date version of MapInfo running.

Let me know what you find out. I also found it very frustrating.
