Recently I got caught severely by the size limitation of the MapBasic
editor. Thus, I decided to try with another alternative. Since then I use
MultiEdit to my great satisfaction. I still work with the eval version
downloaded from MultiEdit's web site, but I consider now to get the full
version.
MultiEdit does not have the file size limitiation. The MapBasic compiler
compiles and links in the background and error messages are forwarded to
MultiEdit. It has project management functions and file crossing search and
replace features, bookmarks etc.. You can also link the MapBasic help to it.
Each source file extension can have its own customized settings. Syntax
highlighting follows Basic standards and could be customized for MapBasic
(which I haven't done yet). I also asked before this list if anybody has
customized MultiEdit for MapBasic fully and would like to share the
configuration files. So far no reaction.
The only thing is that under some conditions the error messages were not
forwarded to MultiEdit, and I could not setup the project file extension to
bring up error messages as easy with mb source files (the file name
placeholder did not work). In any case you can open the MapBasic error file
and view it in MultiEdit. Most of the time Error messages are displayed as
with MapBasic's original editor.
Customizing for MapBasic is not too difficult, however, to get started I
needed assistance from MultiEdit Techsupport (answer came within one day).
To sum, MultiEdit is a very good, perhaps not perfect, alternative to the
standard MapBasic editor.

Betreff: MI Compiling MB code outside MB?
Can MB code be compiled outside MB?
Is anybody using text editors other than the standard MB to write code,
if so which ones. Can anybody recommend a good editor. It would be great
to be able to highlight IF THEN ELSE loops etc.
