Dear List,

In an answer to a previous inquiry, people recommended to take a look at
CodeWright or MultiEdit as a replacement of MapBasic's editor.

I have checked evaluation copies of both of them, and both seem to be
capable alternatives to the MapBasic editor, so thanks for the advices.

CodeWright's main advantage is that setup for MapBasic is easier due support
files available on MapInfo's web site. It was only difficult to set it up so
that an outline view of a MapBasic source code file shows the included
functions and sub routines. This is a feature which MultiEdit does not have
already (they say it is in development though.)

MultiEdit was a little unstable in forwarding error messages, I needed some
assistance from MultiEdit tech support to get through it. On the other hand,
MultiEdit's documentation and help system is much superior.

Thus, at the moment, because of the very nice outline view of CodeWright and
the already existing support files (which also provide MapBasic syntax
highlighting) I would prefer CodeWright over MultiEdit. This preference
would nearly equalize if somebody would have written already MultiEdit
support files, which would allow for setup and syntax highlighting. It would
be nice if those users could share these files with the list.

Since both editor's are so much more capable than MapBasic's own editor, I
wonder, why MapInfo does not decide to ship one of them with MapBasic, even
if this would make MapBasic a little more expensive.

Finally, I haven't tried Visual MapDev, an editor which apparently allows
visual MapBasic dialog design. Does anybody know if an evaluation version
exists ? I haven't found it on MapDev's web site.
