NEW ERA IN REMOTE SENSING TO BEGIN. New York Times, 28 Apr. 1999.
If all goes well, the most advanced civilian satellite with remote
sensing capabilities will be launched soon. The new satellite built by
Lockheed
Martin for Space Imaging will have resolution of one meter. The
satellite will orbit 420 miles above the earth, can cover the entire
earth's surface
except the poles, and can photograph any given place every one to three
days. The photos will be for sale in two months and will cost between
$25 to
$300 per square mile with one square mile being the minimum size. The
cost of the satellite is $700 million. There is some concern the photos
could end
up in the wrong hands.
Now all they need to do is get the thing off the ground and in the right
orbit!
