Thanks to all who responded to my request (below). Also thanks to the guys
at ExaMin who gave me a call. (What a great response). Here's the summary of
responses.
In the end I settled on the pixshow.mbx. Although it only handles points, it
seamed easier to use and comes with the source code, so I might add lines
and polygons soon. The ease of it is that you only need to add a column to
the table and enter the path of the image file. The pixshow.mbx will auto
register the file for you, so you don't have to "register" all your photos
for display.
As it is on the mapinfo web site, I ask the question as to why it has never
been at least packaged as a tool with MapInfo pro or even better, built in.

Hi Chris,
David Haycraft has a good application with source code called infolist.mbx
that builds a togglebutton that can select items in a point layer. This can
be associated with anything else, for example I used it to open a different
workspace associated with each individual point, you could use it to open
raster image tables to show pictures.

Consider trying click2vu.mb as a starting point. It comes with no
guarantees!
Basically click2vu uses a "SelChangedHandler" system event handler and a
table of "hotspot" objects to provide links to MapInfo image tables (in fact
any mappable MapInfo table).

Yes there's one with the KGM utilities available on the MapInfo-L ftp
site and elsewhere. I can't remember its name - maybe image.mbx or
photos.mbx or something like that.
(it was actually multimed.mbx)
