The USGS java-based Digital Earth Explorer is up at http://dss1.er.usgs.gov. You need a fast internet pipe and a 4.51 Netscape or 4.01 IE to check it out, but it's a pretty spiffy job. It's not MapXtreme and Oracle8i, but I think it's worth a look for anyone building a java map server in a distributed data environment. (gives you something to drool over). One of the creators, Marc Levine, explained to me the technology used to build it: "The Digital Earth Explorer is based on several COTS products. ESRI's SDE, MR. SID, INFORMIX, FME, and home grown Java development. The data is current managed in a semi distributed manner. The spatial data sets (with the exception of SDE data sets) reside on a mid server in Reston, VA. This semi distributed model will change within the next year and nodes will feed this portal. The data bases or attribution is fully distributed. The current hardware configuration is a sun 5000 as the mid server. However, this makes little difference in the fully distributed model. A node could be any platform with any backend. We would generate a configuration file that would act as schema template for the Java map server. This application is patent pending, but we will be looking for partners, collaborators, etc... in the next year or so." Partners? Collaborators, anyone? - Bill Thoen ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
