I know MapInfo will be more tightly integrated with
Oracle Spatial in the future, but in the meantime I've
updated my MapInfo 5-Oracle MapBasic utility so
now it will work with 8i Spatial (only tested with
Oracle 8.1.5 on NT so far) as well as with previous
versions of Oracle Spatial. I've uploaded it to the
incoming directory at Bill's ftp site (ftp.ctmap.com).
In the previous version the utility allowed you to
upload any MapInfo table into the Spatial Cartridge or
Spatial Data Option in Oracle. Now the utility lets
you still upload to the old relational schema used in
pre-Oracle 8i versions, but it now also allows you to
upload data to the object-relational model used in
Oracle 8i as well as letting you create SQL*Loader
files to use for bulk-loading into Oracle. You can
still only download point data though (hopefully with
newer versions of MapInfo you won't need this utility
at all anymore).
The main purpose of the utility is to allow you to
turn debugging on and watch the steps required to
create a spatial table in Oracle and how to populate
it, but it also allows you to do things like manage
all indexes (create, drop, rebuild) on 8i Spatial
directly from within MapInfo and do things like map
out both
fixed-size and variable-sized tiles inside of MapInfo.
* Please be careful - the utility allows you to upload
data into Oracle and also allows you to drop spatial
tables in your Oracle database so please be with it's
use.
The installation steps are located in the zip file on
a html page. This utility isn't supported, but please
let me know if you have any suggestions or run into
any problems so I can fix/update them for future
versions.
