You're not, I've frequently experienced similar problems, it seems to me the
buffering and actually the combining of objects in MapInfo is somewhat troubled.
In my experience building separate buffers doesn't usually give any troubles,
however when using the "one buffer for all objects" it sometimes breaks down. In
one case I traced the problem down to the minimal combination of two line segments
of each two nodes each, any tiny variation af any of the nodes was sufficient to
eliminate the problem.
I found two things to be helpfull, first clean your data using something like
MapCheck to eliminate duplicate nodes and other unhealthy things. Secondly try
variing the smoothness.
I further believe there could be a dirty solution by using some kind of MapBasic
"Jiggle" routine that just would move all nodes by a tiny fraction.
