Whilst you can use other software to help in your map design m(e.g.
MapPublisher), the image result should either be saved as a gif or jpeg
file.  These picture compression formats are most suited for publishing map
output on the web (file size being the most important issue).

Not to steal Majorie Roswell's thunder (!) but Margie wrote this note a few
months back about thumbnail software that can be used as well.

You can also split a picture up into pieces to help in its speedier
download.  See a crime hotspot map I produced that was modified by our web
