Wade, try this SQL in the Mapbasic window:
Select Sum(Area(obj, "sq mi")) from Selection into AreaSum Noselect
Browse * from AreaSum

Howdy Listers...
Bear with me as this is probably a simple process: I have selected approx.
640 polygons (representing open space) from our city's base map. I need to
be able to calculate the total area of the selection (the 640 polygons).
The table I am working with does not include a column to represent the area
for each parcel. Help!
