Hi Matt!
Are the two buffers part of a complex region object, ie a region object
that contains multiple polygons?
If so, there is a bug in version 5 that you may have struck upon.
Setting the background to transparent will for such objects only affect
the largest polygon (sic!), the rest will show with non-transparent
background.
I am told that the bug is reported, found and has been fixed in the
coming 5.5 release.
