Although not a GIS, Microstation is a specialist CAD package and has far
superior Cartographic abilities than MapInfo.
There is an Intergraph plotting utility for Microstation called iplot that
allows total control of your out-put prints by writing a "pen table" to
control line weights, colors, fills, etc .... (and text/labels stay where
you put them).
We do our "high end" mapping in Microstation and corporate project analysis
in MGE. MapInfo is used for desktop analysis and users produce field maps
and some basic maps for reports.

Conversion of graphics from MI to Microstation (and back the other way) is
achieved by exporting to .dxf and then importing the .dxf into Microstation.
There are a couple of alternatives to this like the m2d and d2m utilities
available from the MI ftp site or FME. I haven't had much joy converting MI
tab to Microstation dgn in New Zealand Map Grid using MapInfo's Universal
Translator from MI v5.0, it brings the graphics in, but warps and offsets
the linework. Strange.

Hope I've been of some help.

All the Best
Scott

Subject: MI Microstation versus MapInfo

Here is a fairly broad question: Graphically speaking, what are the
differences between Microstation and MapInfo? The reason I am asking is
because our city is currently exploring the issue of utilizing one base map
throughout. Right now, we have several "base maps" floating around the
city. Some are created and maintained in Microstation, others in MapInfo.
The accuracy of each is questionable, but that is a different issue. In
short, which software produces the best presentation quality maps? I have
no experience with Microstation, and I am only a one-month user of MapInfo.
I thought I could pose this question in this forum in hopes that there is
someone out there who has experience with both softwares. Any insight would
be helpful!

Thanks,

Wade Shelton
