I have had several responses indicating how to get the continental US, HI
and AK on the same map. . I certainly appreciate the effort people took to
give me a hand. One of you scolded me (see way below) for abusing the
listserve such a trivial question. Curious ... that person did not provide a
solution.

Two solutions: both of which I will try. And thanks to three of you - I
can't believe it - who sent files to get me started!

1. Start with the map of the continental US, setup the way you want it with
layers & labels.
Use Map > Clone Window to create 2 new map windows. They will have
identical layers etc as the first.
Zoom in on AK in one map window, HI in another map window, and the
"Lower 48" in the third map window.
Use Window > New Layout to open a blank Layout window.
Position separate frames on the Layout: one for each map window. You
can overlap these frames if you wish. You can use a single additional
frame for the Legend. You probably only need one Legend, since it
likely applies equally to AK, HI and the other 48.

and

2. "If you do not care about the actual Lat/Long of the map, you can simply
make the
map layer editable, then move & resize AK & HI as if they were objects. You
will still be able to thematically shade the map as before. I'm including a
sample you can try - it's the MI states map which I saved with a new name,
made
the map editable, then selected AK & moved it near California and made it
smaller than normal. I then did the same with HI. Good luck!"

This one is likely best for making a map for a web site. When I get it
worked out, I'll post it to the MI listserve website.

Thanks a lot ...
