Nick,
You can calculate volumes using VM by
the following two methods:
- End area calculation - multiply the sum of
the areas bounded by 2 consequtive contours by half the contour
interval. Do this for every contour in the DEM and sum the result,
or
- Prismoidal method - create regions from 3d points
(voronoi) based on height. Then it is a simple process to add a
calculated column to this table which produces a volume above or below a datum
plane for each prism. ie area*(datum-height)
Hope this helps

Subject: MI Calculating Volumes
Dear L-ers,
I don't know if this question has been raised recently (I
think it has in the past...?) but does anyone know a MI based app that can
calculate volumes. I.e. from X,Y and Z data - the way you think Vertical
Mapper could but doesn't. A client has VM but wants volume calculations
without involving an export to a CAD system.
Any ideas??
Happy Xmas and Merry Millennium
