I can hardly sound less euphoric about newsgroups, I use them but
find the mail gets buried very quickly. Some groups are so bad it's
like
watching
  the titles
at the end
of a movie.

In addition I check it my list mail at home ( I have no time at work)
and although I avoid the company firewall stuff It should be noted
most euro's do not get free calls and I do not want to spend hours
browsing through responses of little interest to me at my cost.
OK it takes that bit longer, and I have to collect mail everyday, but
it is a darned easier to sort the wheat from the chaff whilst off
line. It also means I may spend more time reading pleas for help from
newbies who I can help whereas on a newsgroup the subject header
would have to be snappy to get my attention.

I also feel that with a newsgroup, the often failed attempts to get
list members to ensure they try to adequatly title there mail subject
header will have to find a way to work. particularly with the new
strains of MI speak which have recently seemed to take prominence
such as mapX and MapXtreme

eg
MI MB how do I create point?
mb = mabbasic
MI VB how do I link to excel table?
vb = vis basic,
MI ODBC how do I link to brand x database?
odbc= you know what
MI PRINT how to >>>>>>>pdf>>>postscript>>>>>get plotter to work

MI PRO another bug with ............have you tried the .x.x.x update

blah blah blah

I think this has not worked to date because no-one is bothered , I
for one would not want to browse through some of the mail which on
the face of it is simple question eg "MI Open Window", but if it is a
MapBasic question when you read the mail which means I for one am
stuck as I know little MB.

Those still of a mind to go for Newsgroups can you explain why the
web based version of the mail list on Mapinfo's web site is not
acceptable. If there are those who find it difficult to find time to
sift through the headers I say the problem is the header , not the
nature of mail delivery

Bill please keep it by post, it is remains still one of the best
examples of what is right about the internet in an increasingly
deteriorating ocean of digital mediocrity

PS all of you new guys and gals out there , I am still looking after
the mapinfo list map of subscribers locations and business details in
genuine Mapinfo  (tm) format
