mapnik-devel, Andreas has kindly maintained autotools scripts over the years for compiling Mapnik without SCons.
However, these have been unmaintained in trunk for over a year as Andreas is no longer actively using Mapnik. I plan to remove these scripts now to avoid confusion, and in theie place add a ./configure && make wrapper around the SCons scripts.
