Thanks, I've followed the link but haven't found any help in the pages.
I don't even see where there's an example other then reference to
generate_tiles.py which I found and looked at but as I'm using C++ I
don't think this is really what I need either.  I'll open a new thread
describing the exact problem I've encountered with reading rasters.

If you want to see a demo, check out the openstreetmap project. Mapnik
is used extensively and it provides a example of how it all works. For
example, here are complete instruction for getting mapnik to render
maps out of a postgis database:
