Hi Chris,

I doubt you are confused - It is me that's confused! Not being a C++  
programmer it tricky for me to follow the mapnik core approach.

Exposing the api further for the core agg renderer is probably much  
more in line with the way mapnik is set up, and sounds interesting.

But, having rebuilt mapnik with cairo support I do wonder about  
possibilities for rendering additional shapes on cairo surfaces before  
rendering with mapnik.

Tom, based on the current integration with cairo can you see any  
possibilities for drawing arbitrary shapes using pycairo?
