Hi Matt,

I don't know all details about TC but it looks like gdal.input is  
loading whole image into memory.
Couple things you can try :

1. using tiffcp utility (part of LibTIFF package) 'tile' your tiff.
2. try using raster.input which can load tiffs you just need to  
provide bbox.
