Ryan, Thanks. Tickets look perfect. On closer inspection there is no need to allow different arguments - rather we just need to let OGR/GDAL do the job it knows how to do! There is an initial patch ready for you @ http://trac.mapnik.org/ticket/336 This removes the file check so it should work for you - I'd be interested how well the error reporting works now when you, say, mistype the connections string or specify the wrong layer. I'll hold off on committing until we have a few tests and kunitoki can review.
