I also had the same problems with illustrator and cairo output, deja vu font not being found even though it was there, etc. Even pdfs had jumbled text when viewed in illustrator(thought they worked fine in adobe reader!). My solution was to use the postscript output, it seemed to have the most consistent results...But far from perfect!
