here are some details of my environment:
- Mapnik 0.6.1
- Postgis 8.3.7
- Debian Lenny
- Nik2Img 0.4.0
- Tilecache 2.0.4
- QuadCore-CPU
- 4GB RAM
The errors occurs in every situation: The examples above are rendered with
nik2img. I generate the map tiles with Tilecache (Metatile=20,20) and a
tileseed script. I'm also running an OGCserver with access to my XML-style.
Everytime the same error.
My XML-style has about 10700 lines with 81 styles and 110 layers for 3
countries and I can't reduce this. The vector data is stored in EPSG:4326.

Hey, that's it! I never tried this, because my data extent is much smaller
than this. I tested it again with nik2img. The results: with
<Parameter name="estimate_extent">false</Parameter>
<Parameter name="extent">-180,-85,180,85</Parameter>
the render time is about 4 seconds and with:
<Parameter name="estimate_extent">false</Parameter>
the time increases to over 10 minutes!
I cannot explain why, but this is the solution. Does anyone know, why this
happens? It would be helpful to understand it in other situations. Is the
parameter "estimate_extent=true" perhaps unnecessary?
cheers,
Jürgen
