Hello. First posting on this list but I have been working with Mapnik for a couple months now and have appreciated the assistance provided by others.

I would like to make sure I understand what http://trac.mapnik.org/ticket/54 provides and how it may help me. If I have a large tiff file such as one that would represent hill shading for the entire United States created with gdalmerge, at low zoom levels when one tile represents the entire US, the entire tiff file would have to be loaded into memory and scaled by Mapnik. This would probably not be possible because of the large memory requirements. With support for overviews created with gdaladdo, in 0.7.0 I could create many overviews for different zoom levels that would have considerably smaller memory footprint then the full resolution tiff file. The only downside to this approach is the increased disk space required for the overviews. Are these statements correct and/or is this the correct approach?

Yes.
