I've been running it on 9.10 (both 32 and 64bit) without a problem. All of the stock packages are recent enough that it is a simple compile/install to build from source. I think there are some mapnik packages in the package manager but they are old.

This. ^ Also, I had mapnik working on 9.10, but have since moved to 10.04 beta.
