The last time this was discussed appears to be three years ago.
Since the command line tool Nik2Img [1] has appeared as a solution of sorts.

Im looking at using mapnik to do fairly simple shapefile to png conversions for
agricultural mapping purposes [4]. I dont require any interactive or live
renders, no zoom, no tiles, just a one off conversion for archival purposes.

So far ive considered :
- jffmapper, a complete php solution, but old, and not compatible with my
shapefiles [2]
- using mapservers php mapscript, by creating the necessary temp mapfile [3]
- fixing jffmapper, building in support for modern shapefiles
- writing something from scratch using gdal/ogr/gd to do the heavy lifting
- mapnik + Nik2Img

Ive spent two whole days researching this, and hence would be quite happy to
hear of any suggestions as to recommended approach.
