I'm writing a multi-machine render manager, and am trying to avoid storing tiles temporarily on the render machines, since they are immediately transferred to the storage machines through a persistent SFTP connection.

Excellent, that's exactly what I needed. Although I previously read the documentation for these classes that you linked, I didn't understand that you could provide a format argument.
