Michael,

It should work (I use Quantumnik to test Mapnik2 development features), but I 
admit it may be brittle. For now Quantumnik defaults to using mapnik2 if it 
exists and falls back to "import mapnik" if "import mapnik2" fails.

I assume you are getting a big python traceback when you start up QGIS? Can you 
email it to me or post it as an issue at 
https://bitbucket.org/springmeyer/quantumnik/issues
